Annual Destination Guide: Jefferson Parish

New Orleans Gateway for Groups

Jefferson Parish, La.Just minutes away from New Orleans, Jefferson Parish is the gateway to the Crescent City, not to mention a unique and engaging destination all by itself. Offering two major event complexes, top-notch sporting facilities, distinctive venues and some 7,000 hotel rooms, Jefferson Parish allows SMERF planners to craft an exciting event that takes advantage of the parish’s first-class meeting facilities as well as its casinos, historic districts and exquisite cuisines. As home to the New Orleans International Airport, the parish is easy to reach. On top of that, officials like to point out that the Big Easy is a lot easier on a planner’s budget when Jefferson Parish is involved.

The major event facility is the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, La., a multipurpose facility that offers 70,000 square feet of exhibit and meeting space, a 3,500-seat fixed arena and high-quality catering and concessions. Located on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, the center hosts over 400 events annually, including the recent Cheer National cheerleading championship competition. In nearby Westwego, the Alario Center offers a world-class facility that has hosted the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets. The two primary halls offer a number of seating and event options, including nearly 22,000 column-feet square feet in Hall B. In addition, there are 10 acres of adjacent fairgrounds.

Beyond the convenience, Jefferson Parish also offers a wealth of leisure activities for both the sportsman and those who enjoy shopping and food. The waterways of the parish are well-known among birdwatchers and the beaches are ideal for enjoying down time. The parish has rebounded from Hurricane Katrina, and invites planners to experience the hospitality and culture that has made the New Orleans area world-renowned.
